A bad week for Galway WFC just got worse on Saturday afternoon in Eamonn Deacy Park when they conceded a late winner against a visiting side who were winning for the first time this season in the Women’s National League.

Obviously, all the drama with the departure of manager Billy Clery and coach Dave Bell the previous week and the loss of a number of unavailable first team players, meant an unsettled camp going into the game and for the opening half it looked like they had all the issues of the world on their young shoulders.

Galway WFC’s second half recovery was impressive in the circumstances, but most of the damage was done in those opening 45 minutes as they conceded three goals and were outplayed.

Talented players are always in demand no matter what the sport and, ironically, three Galway WFC players were in GAA action on Saturday when in opposition as Mayo hosted Galway in the ladies football National League.

Star striker Rachel Kearns lined out for the home side in Castlebar, while Shauna Brennan and Kate Slevin played for the girls in maroon. Their loss was a blow to a team struggling to replicate some good early season form as Galway WFC were going down to defeat for the third game in succession.

In real terms, the first half did not go well for the Maz Sweeney coached side, but they took the lead on 11 minutes with a smart finish by Abbie Callanan as she latched on to a Lynsey McKey pass and slipped the opener past the advancing Ciara Glackin. The advantage was short lived as Athlone quickly levelled matters with the first of their four set piece goals, Katelyn Keogh scrambling home at the near post following a corner.
