TWO of the favourites for this year’s First Division title will go head-to-head on the opening weekend of the season when Galway United kick-off their campaign with a home game against Shelbourne on Friday, March 26.

The fixtures for the 2021 First Division season were released on Monday, and the schedule has handed United 14 home games in the 27-game season, including two home games against Shelbourne, UCD, and Bray Wanderers, three of the sides expected to be pushing for promotion in what promises to be one of the tightest title races in years.

There will be two away trips to Athlone Town, Cabinteely, and the Cork duo of Cobh Ramblers and Cork City, with United finishing their regular season campaign away to manager John Caulfield’s former club on Friday, October 29.

There were just nine confirmed sides in the fixture list that was released, but facility for a 10th side – expected to be a Limerick club – has been made with the inclusion of a club designated as TBC in the fixture list.
