GOING into this Premier Division game in Drom on Friday night, the defending champions were only in second place in the table as they hosted the undefeated league leaders in the wind and rain in Drom.

However, from the early exchanges, it was the home side who set the standards as Mikie Fox provided the assists for their two opening half goals, before the dismissal of Athenry’s Adam Duffy for a needless push off the ball on Aaron Conway just before the break certainly killed off any likelihood of a visitors’ revival.

In fairness, ten-man Athenry offered an attacking threat on the resumption, but seldom did they look like making a breakthrough and getting back into the contest. Therafter, Salthill Devon just picked them off at will and three more goals underlined their domination as Athenry limped out of the contest in a timid fashion. The outcome left the sides sharing leadership of the table, with the teams still having to meet on one more occasion before the season’s end.

Recent meeting between the teams have all fallen the way of Devon and an early goal set them on the way on this occasion when Cillian Doyle applied the far post header to send a Fox corner to the net. The visitors probed but seldom threatened as a Ray Moran shot easily saved by Eric Mamala was a rare effort on target.
