Topaz seeks critical replacement of fuel tanks

Topaz has said it is “critical” that underground fuel tanks at its filling station at Cemetery Cross are replaced – because they are more than 30 years old and could begin to leak.

The fuel company said the normal design life of fuel tanks is 20 years, and the current ones have “reached end of life status”.

Topaz Energy Ltd has sought permission to decommission five tanks (with total capacity of 80,000 litres) beneath Bohermore Service Station and to replace them with five new tanks with a total capacity of 100,000 litres.

According to the application, the development will ensure that environmental protection is maintained; that it will improve safety and traffic congestion and there will be no visual or other impacts associated with the development.

“The normal design life of underground fuel tanks is 20 years. The existing tanks were installed more than 30 years ago and have reached end of life status. In the interests of environmental protection, it is critical that outdated tank infrastructure is withdrawn from service before it deteriorates to a level where the risk of fuel leakage becomes a reality,” the application reads.
