Top quality and high prices at Galway Sheep Show

THE Annual Show and Sale of pure bred registered Galway Sheep was a very successful event even if it didn’t reach the extraordinary heights of last year.

The standard was extremely high and judges of the calibre of Padraic Niland and Michéal Conneely were very impressed by the sheep on show. They were joined by Henry Hughes, who judged the wool classes with his usual consummate skill.

One of the features of the sale was the demand for hogget rams and ram lambs by commercial breeders, who travelled from many parts of Ireland. Tom Murphy won the breeding ewe class and his sheep made €197.

On only her second year showing sheep, Bláthnaid Gallagher won the ewe hogget class and achieved €295. This particular lot also won the Joe Casey Cup for the best pen of female sheep at the show. Gerry Daly was in 2nd place getting €170 while Hubert Melia won the 3rd prize.

In the ewe lamb class, Gerry Nolan won the Colrevagh cup, recently presented by John and Margaret Hegarty, and he achieved a price of €275. John and Mary Greaney were 2nd in this class and realised €255 while Noel Kearns received €116 for his 3rd prizewinners.

Demand for hogget rams was intense and Raymond Casey got first prize, achieving €595 in the sale.  Raymond went home with two cups as this was also the highest price realised on the day. He also won the best wool in this category.

Seán Kilkelly scooped the second and third prizes here achieving €330 and €165 respectively. Martin Warde won the 4th and 5th prizes realising €350 for one ram while the other ram was not sold on the day.
