Top names and new talent for Galway Film Fleadh

Lisa McGee, creator of the hit Channel 4 TV series Derry Girls will give the Screenwriters Masterclass at this year's Fleadh.

Derry screenwriter and playwright Lisa McGee, best known for the hit Channel 4 series Derry Girls, will be the subject of this year’s Screenwriters Masterclass at the Galway Film Fleadh. McGee is the creator, writer and executive producer of the critically acclaimed Channel 4 series which was first broadcast in 2018 and concluded last month.

It was inspired by her own experience growing up in Derry in the 1990s before the Good Friday Agreement was signed. Derry Girls which went on to become a worldwide phenomenon received two BAFTA nominations for Best Scripted Comedy Series, while McGee has also received numerous awards for her writing, including for Best Comedy Writing on Television from the British Screenwriters’ Awards and Best Writer in a Comedy at the IFTA Gala Television Awards. In 2018, she was listed as one of BBC’s 100 Women.

McGee co-created The Deceived with her husband, Tobias Beer and her other TV credits include London Irish, Raw, Being Human, The White Queen and Indian Summers. She recently worked as a creative director and writer for the BBC Four series, Skint, a collection of monologues about poverty.

Mike Newell will be the subject of this year’s Director Masterclass at the Fleadh.

His long list of directing credits includes multi-award-winning films, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Donnie Brasco and Four Weddings and a Funeral.

He was also at the helm for Dance with a Stranger which won the Cannes Prix de la Jeunesse; The Good Father, winner of the Prix Italia; Enchanted April, the winner of two Golden Globes; and the Irish classic, Into the West.   More recent credits include Prince of Persia and Great Expectations and his latest film is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.
