Top city attraction has become an ‘eyesore’

ONE of Galway’s most popular tourist attractions, the Browne Doorway in Eyre Square, has become an embarrassment to the city according to Mayor Pádraig Conneely.
The base of the monument has been surrounded by hoarding since the redevelopment of Eyre Square due to damage to the foundation, and the Mayor says it is time now to restore it to its former glory.
“It has become an eyesore. Some years ago the hoarding was put up around it, to protect it, and assess damage to the foundation and carry out any necessary repair work,” said the Mayor.
“It is time that a decision is made on removing the hoarding and restoring the Browne Doorway to its former glory. It is a popular and significant tourist attraction in the city and an important part of the culture and heritage of the city and to leave it the way it is at present is an embarrassment,” he added.
