THE Galway senior and intermediate championships return this weekend but not as we know it. With just 200 people allowed inside the grounds, it is going to make for a very strange experience for all involved.

There has been a great deal of frustration over the restrictions on crowds given the size of the venues and this has put pressure on county officials and clubs alike when it has come to distributing their meagre allocations.

In any event, teams cannot afford to be distracted by this as they set out on their championship journey and credit to Galway GAA and TG4 for providing live coverage of a selection of games through their respective mediums.

Although all eyes will be on champions St. Thomas’ as they commence their three-in-a-row bid against Castlegar, the big showdown of the weekend is that of 2019 finalists Liam Mellows and title challengers Turloughmore.

Elsewhere, the senior ‘B’ clash between Craughwell and Gort has been postponed until the following weekend due to a tragic death in Gort.

In the intermediate championship, last year’s finalists Kilconieron face 2019 junior ‘A’ winners Athenry in Loughrea on Saturday (6pm) while Abbeyknockmoy, relegated from senior, play Kiltormer at Duggan Park, Ballinasloe, on Sunday (1pm). For IHC games, see fixtures.
