Galway WFC fell victim to a five-star show from Shelbourne in the Women’s National league on Saturday as the Dublin side moved a step closer to the league title.

The win lifts Shels onto 28 points with one game remaining, and leaves the league title in their own hands. They are four points ahead of Peamount United, and while Peamount do have two games in hand, they also have to play Shels next weekend, where a win for the Tolka Park side will clinch the title for them.

They had this win wrapped up by half-time on Saturday afternoon, as they took a 3-0 lead into the break in a game in which all the major talking points occurred in that opening 45 minutes.

As well as three goals, the first-half also produced two missed penalties, the first of which fell to the visitors with less than five minutes on the clock. Shels also missed a penalty in the first-half, but unlike the visitors, it did not prove as disastrous, as they tucked away the rebound for that 3-0 half-time lead.

Galway WFC were handed a chance to really settle into the tie in the 4th minute when Aoife Thompson was bundled over in the penalty area. Savannah McCarthy took the responsibility, but she never got any power behind her shot, allowing Shels ’keeper, Rachel Kelly, to get down low to her right to make the save.

The visitors were punished for that miss just four minutes later when the home side took the lead. A corner from the left was cleared, but only to the edge of the box where it was sent back into the danger area by Ciara Grant.
