Toddler lift death: file likely to go to DPP

A file is likely to be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions in the coming months in relation to the tragic death of a three-year-old boy in a city office building.

Little Solomon Soremekun was crushed to death in the lift shaft of the Hynes Building on St Augustine Street on January 13 last year.

A spokesperson for the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) said its investigation into the incident is continuing.

It is believed that Solomon stepped into the lift as his mother and siblings were leaving the Social Welfare office in the building, and somehow managed to open the doors from the inside while the lift was moving.

The HSA said that all fatal accidents result in a file being prepared for the DPP, but could not confirm when the file will be prepared for the DPP. However, it is expected to be forwarded in the coming months.

The investigation involves an extensive technical examination of the lift and shaft, as well as gathering witness statements.

The DPP will then decide on whether any person, or company, should face charges.
