Druid Theatre’s new production of Martin McDonagh’s The Beauty Queen of Leenane will return to Galway’s Town Hall Theatre in September, 20 years after its debut in the same venue. Booking will open next Thursday, May 5, at the Town Hall for the run from September 19-24,

Druid’s Artistic Director Garry Hynes will direct Marie Mullen, Aisling O’Sullivan, Marty Rea and Aaron Monaghan in this new production.

Set in Connemara, The Beauty Queen centres on Maureen Folan, a plain, lonely woman in her early 40s, and Mag, her manipulative, ageing mother. Mag’s interference in Maureen’s first and potentially last romantic relationship sets in motion a chain of events that are funny and horrific.

The Beauty Queen of Leenane’s 1996 debut was a co-production between Druid and the Royal Court Theatre. It later transferred to the West End and Broadway, winning four Tony Awards in 1998 including Best Direction for Garry Hynes. Marie Mullen who won a Tony for her portrayal of Maureen in that production, now plays Maureen’s mother Mag.

The Galway run in September will be followed by a tour to Cork, Limerick and Dublin and a coast-to-coast tour of the US.

Tickets go on sale from  Thursday, May 5, from Town Hall Theatre. It will run from September 19-24 at 8pm nightly with a matinee on September 24 at 2pm. Previews are from September 15-17. Tickets €26/22.
