Thriller on the cards in a clash of big-scoring sides

Eamonn Ó Loinsigh (left) will be key to Naomh Anna Leitir Móir's hopes while Dunmore MacHales centre-back Sean Murray can expect a busy afternoon.

This year’s intermediate Gaelic football final will be contested by two gun-slinging squads from both sides of the Corrib as Dunmore MacHales take on Naomh Anna Leitir Móir this Saturday in Pearse Stadium (2pm).

In their respective semi-finals, both teams’ attacks delivered bullets with seven goals between them:  Dunmore were 3-7 to 0-9 victors over previously unbeaten St Brendan’s; while Naomh Anna Leitir Moir did one better as they overcame favourites Oileáin Árann 4-7 to 0-14.

It sets up a thrilling contest should both teams bring their A game. Goals are priceless at this time of the year and both have provided examples of their firepower, but they also have overcome stumbles to get within touching distance of this decider.

Denis Fallon’s Dunmore MacHales started the championship with a 1-11 to 0-11 defeat to Corofin putting them on the back foot immediately, and while they responded with a 3-12 to 2-10 victory over Williamstown the second day, many doubted their chances of reaching the quarter-finals.

However, the former Galway kingpins overcame group leaders Oranmore/Maree by 1-8 to 0-9 six weeks ago in the final group game to top the group, before seeing off Glenamaddy 3-9 to 1-13 in the quarter-finals four weeks ago.

They then ended the interest of last year’s Junior A champions, St Brendan’s ,to secure their first semi-final victory following defeats at that stage in 2019 and 2020.

Shane McGrath was the undisputed man of the match against St Brendan’s, and he is joined in the inside line by the equally excellent Brendan Carr. Both were part of the club’s recent U-19 county title success and they’ve scored three goals each this campaign.
