Three school sides set for quarter-final ties
There are two Galway schools in national cup action next week as the national juvenile season begins to draw to a close.
The Bish are in U-19 School’s Cup action on Monday next, February 3, when they take on Mercy Mounthawk of Tralee in the U-19 A Boys’ quarter-final in Tallaght at 11am. The winners will take on either St Malachy’s College Belfast or St Mary’s CBS from Portlaoise in the semi-final at 3pm.
The following day sees Coláiste Éinde take on Mercy SS from Waterford in the U-19 A Girls’ quarter-final at 12.30pm. The winners will face either Loreto Foxrock or Scoil Chríost Ri Portlaoise in the semi-final at 3pm.
Then following week sees the Bish in action again, with the school facing Malahide CS in the U-16 A Boys’ quarter final on Tuesday February 11 (11am). The Bish won the U-16 A title last season, defeating Calasanctius College of Oranmore 58-56 after double overtime in the final. The winners will face ether St Oliver’s of Drogheda or Pres Brothers Cork in the semi-final at 3pm.
Meanwhile, Galway’s four national league sides are all back in action this weekend. In the Men’s Super League, Moycullen welcome Belfast Star to the Kingfisher at NUIG tomorrow at 7.30pm, looking to get back to winning ways after a 71-66 home defeat to UCD Marian in their last outing.
It is the second consecutive match-day in Galway for the Belfast side, who ran out 76-59 winners over Maree in Oranmore a fortnight ago to stay joint top of the table, but Moycullen ran them close when they met in Belfast back in October, going down 76-68, and they will fancy their chances of an upset.
In a switch around of fixtures from two weeks ago, UCD Marian also face Galway opposition for the second straight game when they welcome Maree to Belfield tomorrow (7pm). The Dublin side ran out 89-77 winners when the sides met in Galway back in October, and sit third in the table heading into the weekend, just three points behind the top two of Belfast Star and reigning league champions, Tralee Warriors.
