Galway Bay fm newsroom – Over three-quarters of patients that attended the Emergency Department at Galway University Hospitals last month were seen within nine hours.
New figures from the HSE reveal that waiting times are improving, with almost two-thirds of patients treated within six hours during the month of May.
This week’s meeting of the HSE Regional Health Forum West was told that the hospitals group is ahead of other Irish hospitals with regard to the 6-hour patient experience target.
CEO Bill Maher also confirmed that there are no plans to close any wards at the department during the summer period.
However, he says the hospital may take any available opportunities to reduce 7-day beds to 5-day beds where possible to allow staff to take leave.
County Cathaoirleach Mary Hoade, who raised the issues, says it’s important that beds are not closed during the summer.
