Three left in hurling manager race

THREE names remained in the hat to succeed Ger Loughnane as Galway manager when the county’s five man Hurling Board sub-committee sat down last night to finalise their deliberations ahead of tonight’s monthly meeting, where they are expected to announce the successful candidate to delegates from around the county.

The three – Noel Lane, Michael Bond, and John McIntyre – were called back for a second round of interviews at the Raheen Woods Hotel, Athenry, on Sunday night after all eight candidates for the position were interviewed at the same venue on Thursday and Friday nights of last week.

All three were expected to be contacted by the Hurling Board Secretary, John Fahey, at some stage this morning and delegates will be informed of the final decision when they meet at the Athenry hotel this evening.

Lane, who declined to name a backroom team ahead of the interviews, was previously at the helm during 2001 and 2002, guiding Galway to an All- Ireland final in which they lost to Tipperary during his first year in charge. Some observers felt …
