Three early goals add to Mervue’s blues

THE alarming slump continued for Mervue United on Saturday night as the east side club suffered their fifth successive league defeat, going down 3-0 at the hands of Longford Town at Flancare Park.

Mervue had hoped for a good start in the wake of their recent woes, but instead it took Longford just 24 seconds to take the lead, when a Jason McCarthy cross was met by the head of the unmarked Adrian Murphy, and his effort squirmed past Eoin Martin in the Mervue goal.

Then on 13 minutes Longford’s Darren McKenna was through on goal after Damian O’Rourke was caught in possession, but Martin produced a fine block with his leg to deny Longford a second.

However, that second goal arrived within a minute of McKenna’s effort – as the resulting corner whipped in by Michael Foley was headed in by McCarthy who found space in the box.

As Mervue struggled through the shock of falling two behind so early, Longford continued to toy with their Galway counterparts and found a third on the half hour mark when a Foley free from the right flank was beautifully flicked in at the near post by Derek Glynn.
