Thousands to descend on Salthill for the annual Fives
Date Published: 30-May-2011
The soccer community in Galway will descend on Salthill this weekend for the annual Salthill Devon Carlsberg National Fives, which is celebrating its 35th birthday this year.
More than 130 teams will be taking part in this year’s knock-out competition, and to mark its 35th birthday, this year the tournament organisers have introduced an Over 35s category, adding a little more diversity to the already popular current four categories of U-11, U-13, Open and Buy Back Tournament.
The knockout competition creates great excitement and rivalry as teams battle it out throughout the weekend to be in with a chance of claiming the title.
The Untouchables have been installed as early favourites in the Over 35s section.
Twenty years after winning The Carlsberg National Fives tournament, some of Galway United’s FAI Cup winning side of 1991 – Derek Rogers, Stephen Lally and Jimmy Nolan – join another Galway United legend Ollie Neary, as well as Galway Bay FM Head of Sport Ollie Turner and Connacht Tribune and Galway Bay FM soccer contributor Mike Rafferty in a side tipped to sweep all before them.
