Third time’s a charm. That’s exactly how it will be for the Galway and Leitrim minors in Bekan’s Centre of Excellence this Saturday afternoon when they meet in the quarter-finals of the Connacht minor Gaelic football championship (2pm).

The game only got the go-ahead last week with the lifting of Level 5 restrictions. The initial lockdown on March 12 put sport on the back burner, and when manager Alan Glynn assembled his squad again in September, they were all set to play this fixture on Friday, October 23.

Another stumbling block arrived, with the powers that be determining that although the senior championships could go ahead during this latest bout of Level Five’s terms and conditions, the U-20 and Minor grades were not deemed to be of the elite category, and were therefore ceased. Young lads across the country were duly left in a tizzy.

“We got word last Tuesday that we were back up and running,” Glynn told Tribune Sport this week. “We trained Thursday, and we played a bit of an in-house game on Sunday, and we’ll train this week then before the game Saturday. It’s not perfect but we’ll take it, it’s better than nothing.

“We had been back in September for six weeks. We’d a great six weeks, and we got as far as the last week. We were due to play on the Friday night, and we got as far as Wednesday and the game was pulled.

“It got pulled on the Wednesday and obviously the lads were devastated with that. The signs looked very ominous at the time, but fast forward whatever six weeks it was, and now we’re back in action.
