Third place for Shaughnesy at Irish 10k race Championships

THE competitive National 10k Road Race championships were held in the Phoenix Park last Sunday and Galway athletes fared well in tough running conditions.

Laura Shaughnessy of DSD competed on the winning Irish team in their match with Great Britain which formed part of the event. She was placed third Irish athlete home in the Nationals, clocking 35.15 to claim bronze, behind only Shona Heaslip and Kerry O’Flaherty. Brendan McDonnell of GCH was the first Galway man over the line, with a time of 32.48, a solid season opener.

The GCH women’s team were led home by Regina Casey in 38.12, ahead of Sinead Brody who ran 38.42, and Tara Whyte in 41.05. TheGCH Masters Over 35 squad packed well, with Timmy Jones just ahead of Paul Keane and Gerry Carty.

Martin Kearney took the O60 category silver with a solid and well paced 39.22 clocking. The GCH Over 50 women’s team with Christine Kennedy, Barbara Bergin and Mags Sheridan ran well with the evergreen Kennedy winning gold at Over 60 and Bergin claiming silver at O55 level.

Meanwhile, the Galway Athletics Board hosted their annual awards night at a well-attended function in the Meadow Court Hotel, Loughrea last Saturday, with guest of honour Paul McNamara, the High Performance Director of Athletics Ireland.
