Thieves target radiators for new black market

Published

Date Published: 23-Mar-2011

The rising cost of metal is believed to be behind the latest crime scourge to hit County Galway in recent weeks with thieves making off with radiators and water cylinders from vacant houses.

It is understood that several estates in the north of the county have been targeted by the thieves who are preying on houses that have now been sold following the collapse of the property market.

And it seems that the focus of attention is on radiators and, to a lesser degree, the hot press tanks as the Gardaí try and trace the gang responsible.

Raids on vacant houses have taken place in Headford, Corofin, Corrandulla, Tuam and Dunmore over the past two or three weeks – in one instance a house was flooded in the process. Houses in the South Galway area have also been targeted.

It is unlikely that the radiators are being sold on as there are very few new houses being built at the moment – there is the possibility that they may be offered for sale to metal companies in return for cash.

Detective Sgt Mick O’Driscoll told The Connacht Tribune that they were following a number of lines of inquiry at the moment but confirmed that no arrests had been made.

He said that the thieves were targeting estates that had quite a number of unsold houses, breaking in and removing the radiators. He said that they would have to use large vans or trucks for this purpose.
