There’s no room for error as title race swings into action
By Eanna O’Reilly
NEXT week sees the first round of the highly anticipated Galway Senior Camogie championship, with the competition getting underway with a bang. The first match of the senior A championship is a mouth-watering one for camogie fans, as reigning county and All-Ireland champions Sarsfields host 2018 county champions Ardrahan, next Tuesday evening in New Inn (7pm).
Both teams will be going hell for leather to win this vital opening game and avoid the immediate pressure of potential elimination. With only two group games each, there will be no room for error in this year’s championship, with next week’s defeated teams coming under pressure straight away.
Inevitably, one of the top senior teams in the county, Sarsfields, Ardrahan or Mullagh will be eliminated at the end of the group phase this year. The phrase ‘Group of Death’ may be overused, but it most definitely applies to this group in this year’s senior championship. Mullagh are the team with a bye next week and no doubt will keenly observe the outcome of Sarsfields versus Ardrahan.
Senior A, Group 2 also gets underway next week, with the first match taking place on Wednesday evening in Castledaly (7:30pm). The 2019 finalists St. Thomas’ host Oranmore/Maree, in a repeat of the championship quarter-final last October. On that occasion, the two teams produced a cracking contest, with Thomas’ coming out on top, on a score line of 3-14 to 2-11. If that game is anything to go by, supporters should be in for a great evening’s entertainment in Castledaly. Davitts are the side who have a bye next week, before a home fixture against St. Thomas’ in round two.
In the senior B division, Athenry face off against Cappataggle on Sunday (12:00) in Carnaun) while Craughwell host Eyrecourt on Tuesday evening (7:45pm). With only one team progressing to the quarter finals from senior B Groups 1 and 2, each result is vital for those with title ambitions.
