More than 7,700 crimes were recorded in the Galway Garda Division in the first half of this year – down around 4% on the same period last year – according to figures from the Central Statistics Office.

The figures show that in the first six months of 2018, there were 7,747 crimes recorded by Gardaí locally, down from 8,054 in the first half of 2017.

There were 170 offences recorded while the perpetrators were in custody or in breach of court orders – down from 229 in the first half of 2017.

An analysis of the CSO statistics by the Connacht Tribune shows that by far, the most common offences which Gardaí had to deal with in the Galway area in the first half of this year were thefts, with 1,342 offences recorded, up from 1,310 from the comparative period last year.

But Gardaí also had to deal with very serious crime, including 74 rape and sexual assault reports (down from 80 in the six-month period last year); 15 murder threats (on a par with last year); 28 offences involving weapons (down from 33); 26 robbery offences (up from 9) and 20 arson (down from 34).

The Gardaí also recorded two blackmail or extortion offences in the first half of this year – there were none during the same period last year. The figures also show three carjacking offences in the first six months, with none recorded in the comparative period last year.
