THEFT FROM CITY HOMES AND CARS ON THE RISE

Over 550 city residents had their homes broken into last year, with cash, laptops and jewellery among the most common items stolen.

556 homes were burgled, representing an increase of almost seven percent on the figure for 2008.

Theft from parked vehicles is also on the rise.

231 vehicles were broken into in 2009, an increase of three point five percent on the year before.

Last year, there were 934 miscelleneous reported thefts such as those from bus and rail passengers, as well as theft from garden sheds.
