Theatre groups seek members
Galway Youth Theatre and Galway Community Theatre are currently recruiting new members.
The groups, which operate out of Galway Arts Centre are among the most active organisations in Galway – both featured most recently at the Galway International Arts Festival.
Galway Youth Theatre (GYT) was set up in 1991 to provide a theatre-training facility for young people from Galway City and County. Its performance course gives a practical theatre training programme for people aged 16-26. The course has an open-door policy and GYT welcomes all young people to join the training programme.
GYT’s performance course operates on a two-tier strand – with a workshop training programme running two nights per week alongside a practical production output where members are given the opportunity to take part in a variety of one-off projects and productions.
The second group, Galway Community Theatre Network was set up by Galway Arts Centre to provide theatre-training for people who are too old to join GYT.
However, the group works with GYT to create intergenerational productions – the two have combined to stage plays like Midsummer and Frank Pig Says Hello – that wouldn’t have been practical otherwise.
