Theatre awards scheme funds seven local artists
Local theatre-makers Andrew Flynn of Decadent Theatre, Anna Mullarkey with Brú Theatre; Christian O’Reilly; Little John Nee; Luke Morgan, Morgan Creative; Róisín Stack and Sarah Jane Scott have been selected to receive funds and rehearsal space in the inaugural Patron Donation Awards scheme set up by the Town Hall Theatre.
This scheme, established by Galway’s main arts venue, aims to support locally-based artists, and companies in “researching and developing original, ambitious projects, which have something to say about the times we live in”, according to Town Hall Theatre Director, Fergal McGrath.
The inaugural scheme attracted 17 “excellent submissions” from across a range of performing arts which resulted in a highly-competitive process, he said as he announced the seven winners.
“The number and calibre of the submissions were so high that we had to increase the guaranteed fund to €12,000, highlighting yet again the strength, quality and ambition of Galway’s artists.”
Fergal McGrath praised the local artists for their “dynamic and innovative proposals. . . which will forge new partnerships and collaborations’’.
In addition to the financial bursaries of between €1,000 and €2,000, the winners will be given rehearsal or development space for their projects in the Town Hall Theatre and will also be mentored as required.
“We envisage that the successful applicants will develop their work within the Town Hall and be supported by the organisation to bring their work to the next stage,” said Fergal McGrath. “The team at the theatre are looking forward to working with the award-winners and seeing how the projects develop.’’
