The Raines enjoy moment in sun
Galway folk band, the Raines, are enjoying a moment in the sun at present with the release of their debut single, Bare Feet on Grass which featured on RTÉ Radio 1’s playlist and has been named Tune of the Week on the broadcaster’s website.
Having formed in 2018, the trio of Yvonne Tiernan, Ruth Dillon and Juliana Erkkonen began to get serious about the project last summer, writing, rehearsing and lining up gigs.
All have impressive musical CVs. Yvonne (vocals/banjolele) sings and has toured with The Chieftains. Ruth (vocals, guitar, ukulele) toured and recorded with singer Dolores Keane, is a former member of Galway band, The Molly Hicks, and has released three solo albums. Juliana, also a former member of The Molly Hicks (fiddle and vocals), has long been at the forefront of the Americana musical scene in Ireland. Juliana and Yvonne had also been in a band together previously, called The Grey Willows.
The three all met on Inis Oírr in 2018 and decided to form The Raines. Their sound is a mix of vocal harmonies, rhythmic strings, and honest lyrics – with a bit of Americana added in for good measure.
Bare Feet on Grass was recorded in Galway’s Black Gate Studio, engineered by Liam King, who is also a musician. Award-winning producer Brian Masterson, who has worked with The Chieftains, Van Morrison, Willie Nelson and The Bothy Band, among others, mixed and mastered the track.
