Driving conditions across the county have improved with a thaw setting in.

Temperatures are expected to rise to between 6 and 9 degrees this afternoon and melt any remaining pockets of snow.

Snow showers at dawn left several inches of snow across the entire county, causing poor visibility and treacherous road conditions.

Tuam Gardai reported just one minor crash with no serious damage done.

Gardai in Clifden are warning that although the snow is melting motorists should still drive with extreme caution.

The roads around Galway city, Gort, Loughrea and Ballinasloe are all reported to be clearing with most of the snow melting by now.
