From this week’s Galway City Tribune – Retail giants Tesco and Decathlon are anchor tenants in a planned new ‘urban village’ between Kingston and Knocknacarra.

The plans for the new ‘Kingston Cross’ – a 17-acre site beside the Altan apartments and opposite Aldi and the new Lidl site currently being cleared – were submitted to Galway City Council last week.

1 Kingston Land Ltd, which is ultimately owned by Alanis Capital and the US vulture fund Oaktree Capital also wants to build a new civic plaza, covered sports court, nine smaller shop units, a café/restaurant and medical units.

Those companies also own the Gateway Shopping Park on the opposite side of the road.

According to the application, there will be 137 surface carparking areas and a further 258 ‘undercroft’ spaces, and 148 bike parking spaces in Kingston Cross.

Part of the site is where local residents reported gatherings of 150-200 young people at weekends earlier this year, leading to Gardaí drawing up a targeted response plan.

“The creation of an urban village will bring enormous community benefit by improving choice and competition and reducing the need to travel longer distances to undertake convenience shopping or meet the community’s retail needs.
