Temporary school to be approved for Doughiska

THE Government has indicated it will sanction the establishment of a new temporary primary school to cater for hundreds of children living in the fastest growing suburb of Galway City, in time for next September’s school term.
The Minister for Education Batt O’Keefe announced this week that a primary and post primary school will be constructed in Doughiska under the Department’s Public Private Partnership (PPP) programme.
The two schools will be developed on a shared campus at a seven-acre site and will cater for the population growth areas of Doughiska, Ardaun and Roscam.
Construction work is expected to begin late next year once the tendering process is complete and it is hoped the buildings will be completed and opened by 2012.
However, Galway West Deputy Frank Fahey told the Galway City Tribune that he is confident a temporary school to cater for up to 1,000 children over the age of six in the wider Doughiska area will be sanctioned by the Minister in time for the start of next year’s school term.
“Both City Councillor Mary Leahy and I met with the Minister last week and we asked him to proceed with the establishment of a primary school on a temporary basis from next September.
“The temporary school would cater for the 1,000 children under the age of six living in the area until the two new schools are built.
