Teenager Murphy’s displays for Galway United sparks cross-channel interest
ALEX Murphy had heard rumours of Shamrock Rovers being interested in signing him from Galway United for this season, but he had no interest in making the switch to the Tallaght Stadium.
It is likely to be a very different story this summer, with English Premiership side Newcastle United believed to be on the brink of signing the teenager once he turns 18 next month, but the Galway native says he has tuned out of that conversation, and is instead concentrating on his football.
“The Shamrock Rovers thing, I was told about it, but I had no interest really. I was getting game time here so there was no point going up there and not having that, I am happy here.
“I am just focused on the now, all I am focused on is the present and we’ll see what comes of it. It [the talk of a transfer] is there, but that is for others to be getting on with. I am just focused on my football here and now,” says the youngster.
A 5th Year student at Coláiste Bhaile Chlair in Claregalway, Murphy made his Galway United debut in the 2-1 win at home to Athlone Town in June of last year when he was just 16 years of age, and has made a total of 24 appearances for the club.
It saw him making the transition from the stands to the pitch: he was a regular at United games at Eamonn Deacy Park with his father, Brian, before going on to sign for the club’s Academy from Corrib Celtic, the club based in the Annaghdown and Corrandulla area where he is from.
