GARDAÍ investigating the death of a 16-year-old second level student in the Menlo area over the weekend are treating the case as a tragic accident.
The body of the youth from the Salthill area was found in a wooded field close to the Menlo Road and Monument Road junction at around 8am yesterday morning.
A search had been launched for the missing student after he had failed to return home as expected in the early hours of Sunday morning. He had attended a house party in the Menlo area on Saturday night.
The young student is understood to have been at a house party that night, but left the house sometime after midnight – he would not have been familiar with the area and may have stumbled and fallen.
The alarm was raised early on Sunday morning after his family discovered that their son had not returned home as expected.
Neighbours, friends and local people in the Menlo area, joined with Gardaí in the search for the missing youth on Sunday before making the tragic discovery at around 8 o’clock on Monday morning.
His body was removed to University Hospital Galway early yesterday morning where a post mortem examination was due to be carried out.
