Ragwort: The noxious weed that blights so many road verges.

FARMERS in Galway have been told that the noxious ragwort weed will be treated on road verges during the coming weeks.

It has been stated that Galway County Council have now a programme in place over the coming weeks to tackle a weed that can kill livestock.

Senior Executive Engineer, John Coyle, has confirmed that they have been in contact with the weed control inspector and he this situation needed to be addressed.

The senior official said that he has been in contact with his weed control contractor and is commencing treatment this week.

The operation has been held up due to weather conditions in early August and also because of mapping work that had to be carried out.

“I have been contacted by many concerned farmers who are extremely worried about situation. Under the Noxious Weeds Act, the local authority has a duty to treat this toxic weed along the road verges across the county roads.

“The situation is grave for farmers as if it goes into silage, ground and baled with the silage the result is fatal for animals.

“I must commend the Tuam MD [Municipal District] engineering team who deployed a team in 2020 to treat the noxious weed. However, it has sprung up again throughout the county,” said Mr Coyle.
