The turf cutters and contractors association claim a minority of bog owners in the west affected by the EU ban are accepting financial compensation.

A representative of the national parks and wildlife service told a meeting of the west regional authority that over 2 million euro had been paid out in the western region.

That’s around 1 thousand 327 payments.

However, the TCCA estimates there are up to 6 thousand landowners in the west are affected by the special area of conservation designations.

Around 2 and a half thousand of those are based in Galway.

Michael Fitzmaurice of the TCCA says most turf cutters do not want compensation.
