Taylor comes back to haunt Galway WFC in league tie
Wexford WFC 3
Galway WFC 1
By Mike Rafferty
BACK in the early days of the Women’s National League, Galway WFC had a striker by the name of Sinead Taylor. She was a goal machine and contributed over 20 goals that season. Her career took her elsewhere thereafter and she moved on from the west, but after some time out of the game, this season has popped up at Wexford WFC.
With the South East club having so many internationals in their side, she is not always first choice, but just eight minutes after her introduction at Ferrycarrig Park on Saturday, Taylor found the net.
With the game scoreless at the time, it was a real poacher’s finish as Amanda Budden had initially kept out a shot by Kelly, but Taylor was in like a flash to make it 1-0 with a close range finish. She served Galway well in her time here and even almost a decade later, she is still displayig all the instincts that good strikers never lose.
Mentioning of internationals and Wexford’s Ellen Molloy got her first cap against Ukraine in a European championship qualifier last month and she displayed her quality with the other two home goals. The first a stunnig strike from outside the box to make it 2-1, before a tap in after a Taylor cross left the visitors defence exposed.
However, this game was not all about the home side as just two minutes after the home side took the lead,Galway WFC levelled matters when a Jamie Turrentine shot rebounded off the far post and Aoife Thompson was first to the rebound in finding the net,
However, Galway WFC were not able to hold on as it was the home side who offered the greater scoring threat in the closing stages and, in the process, notched their second win over Billy Clery’s charges this season.
Indeed, it was a game with plenty of opportunities at both ends, with Savanah McCarthy just over with an early free kick from outside the box, while Thompson could not get the better of ‘keeper Gray after an Elle O’Flaherty cross picked her out in the box.
