TAXI DRIVER JAILED FOR CITY SEXUAL ASSAULT
Date Published: 25-May-2011
A 35-year-old Nigerian taxi driver has been sentenced to four years in prison for sexually assaulting a college student in his taxi in Galway last year.
Tope Adejuyigbe, a single man with a former rental address at 9 Sandyview Drive, Riverside, had denied sexually assaulting the then 19-year-old student in the early hours of February 24 last year.
The man’s trial in March heard evidence that the young woman was alone in the taxi when he sexually assaulted her first at traffic lights and then drove past her house.
He then pulled in and sexually assaulted her in the front seat before she managed to escape and run to her accommodation.
Judge Raymond Groarke said the accused had abused his position of trust as a taxi driver and sentenced him to 4 years in prison.
He placed the accused on the sex offenders’ register for life and recommended he be deported immediately back to Nigeria on his release from prison.
