TAOISEACH TO MEET GMIT AND NUIG STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES
Date Published: 13-Dec-2012
The President of GMIT’s Students’ Union has confirmed that the Taoiseach will meet with NUIG and GMIT student representatives.
According to Joe O’Connor from GMIT Students’ Union, Enda Kenny will meet with them following yesterday’s protest in Mayo.
Three members of NUI Galway’s Students’ Union and two members of GMIT Students’ Union as well as a first year GMIT student held the protest at Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s consitutency office in Castlebar.
They’re demanding a reversal of the 3 per cent reduction in the income thresholds for the maintenance grant announced in Budget 2013.
The students chained themselves to Enda Kenny’s constituency office on Tucker Street in Castlebar yesterday and refused to leave.
All six protestors were later arrested by Castlebar Gardai for illegally entering the constituency office but were released last evening.
Joe O’Connor says the meeting with the Taoiseach will be used to discuss alternative solutions to cutting maintenance grants.
