Taoiseach sees ‘no difficulty’ with report on light rail for Galway

From this week’s Galway City Tribune – Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said he does not see any difficulty with ordering a feasibility study for a light rail system in Galway.

Speaking in the Dáil last week, the Taoiseach said he will speak with Transport Minister Eamon Ryan on the matter.

He was responding to questions from Galway West Deputy Catherine Connolly, a long-time advocate of light rail for the city.

The Independent TD said that light rail is a “golden opportunity”, with the Government now faced with having to draw up a new climate action plan, following a Supreme Court ruling in July.

“The required new plan provides a golden opportunity to the government to see the possibilities for climate action, particularly in the area of public transport,” she said.

She highlighted the contribution that a light rail system for Galway could make in addressing our national and international obligations under Climate Change legislation.

“In relation to Galway, the Government has utterly failed to respond to 24,000 people begging it to do, at the most basic level, a feasibility study on light rail to fit in with its national plan,” she said, adding that “the Government has failed to act repeatedly”.
