The Taoiseach has offered his sympathy to the people of Galway following the death of Savita Halappanavar at UHG last month.

Savita, a dentist, had lived in the city with her husband, 34 year old Praveen, an engineer at Boston Scientific, and died after contracting septicaemia following a miscarriage at University Hospital Galway.

Her family claim she was refused a medical termination.

Speaking while officiating at the opening of the Croi facility nearby by hospital, he said the investigations taking place will deal with the issues and facts surrounding her death.

When questioned on the need to expedite a reform in our abortion law, he said the matter has divided Irish society for years and that the government has committed to setting up an expert group with regard to the ABC case.

He added that he won’t rule out an independent inquiry, however reports from other ongoing investigations must be considered to determine the facts.
