The Tánaiste’s not ruling out a public inquiry into the death of Savita Halappanavar, adding his voice to a similar view expressed by Minister Reilly in Galway today.

Speaking this evening Eamon Gilmore said the track record of such inquiries here is that they get ‘mired in legal argument’.

The Health Minister says while he has not ruled out a public inquiry the HSE must carry out its own investigation first to determine if further action must be taken.

James Reilly says the clinical investigation into the death of Savita Halappanavar will help reassure women University Hospital Galway is safe.

Earier today, the Minister met with staff and members of the HSE regional health forum west at Merlin Park Hospital for briefings on health reform measures.

Speaking to Galway Bay fm News, James Reilly said the important thing now was to assure people of the safety of HSE services.
