Tallies: Labour look set to lose Galway West seat

The Labour Party is in line to lose its seat in Galway West, according to tallies.

Derek Nolan, who topped the poll in 2011, has polled poorly in his city base.

Deputy Nolan, who won the seat held for years by Michael D Higgins, was well behind Catherine Connolly (Ind) in the city, and was also out-polled by John Connolly (FF), in city boxes.

Sinn Féin Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, Independent Mike Cubbard, and Social Democrats Niall Ó Tuathail all took a chunk out of Nolan’s first preferences.

Nolan will be in a four-way battle for the final seat but he will be disappointed with his first preference share, which mirrors the poor performance of the minor coalition party nationally.
