TALLIES Galway East: Canney looks set to top poll

With more than half of the boxes tallied in Galway East, it still looks as if Sean Canney will top the poll to retain his Independent seat, but Fine Gael’s Cllr Pete Roche is proving something of a surprise package.

While the vast majority of Fine Gael TD Ciaran Cannon’s main area has yet to be tallied, the Abbeyknockmoy councillor is picking up major chunks of votes in some parts of South Galway.

Sinn Fein’s Louis O’Hara from Athenry is polling extremely well but is unlikely to take a seat as he is not proving transfer friendly from some of the lesser candidates in the race.

But it has been a phenomenal performance on his part and he polled particularly well in all of the Tuam boxes, and even was ahead of local FF councillor Donagh Killilea in many of them.

However, as it stands, it is unlikely that there will be any major change in Galway East with Canney, Fianna Fail’s Anne Rabbitte and Fine Gael’s Ciaran Cannon set to be returned.
