Talented slow-burner David Corley plays Campbell’s

David Corley and his band return to Campbell’s Tavern, Cloughanover, on Saturday, May 27, having made their Irish debut in the venue just outside Headford last year. That show was part of a tour to promote David’s first album Available Light, which he made at the ripe age of 53.

For this show, the Indiana singer will be drawing from his new album, Zero Moon, which was produced by Hugh Christopher Brown. Brown also produced David’s first album, and will be joining him at Campbell’s.

Tom Waits is another big influence on David, who first discovered the iconic songwriter’s work in 1980 while living in Atlanta, Georgia, when bands like REM and the B52s were also making their mark on the music scene there.

“I was blown away, but I was trying to adjust and figure out how to write these jangly, strange guitar songs on a piano.  Hah, and without much luck!

“But then a friend of mine turned me on to Tom Waits’ Swordfishtrombones when I was about 20, I think, and that record, and Tom, changed everything. I learned so much right there. I tracked backwards from there, and listened to everything of his, and saw how he was using traditional song structures, and a lot of acoustic piano, with these wild, strange tales.”

David Corley had found his sound, and after a few decades in the 9-5 world, turned to making his own music – which is well worth hearing.
