Talented Galway boxer Dossen packs a punch at European Championships

THE Olympic Boxing Club in the Westside area of Galway City is preparing to throw the mother and father of all parties this coming Saturday from noon to welcome home one of its own who wrote his name into the history books this week.

Gabriel Dossen (22) became the first Galway fighter to secure a senior European title when he was crowned middleweight champion in Armenia on Monday with a unanimous 5-0 decision against England’s Lewis Richardson in what was his debut at this level – he has previously won two European Youth titles.

In doing so, Dossen also became just the 15th Irish fighter to be crowned a European champion, a list which includes fellow Olympic BC member, Aoife O’Rourke, a Roscommon native who also won gold, back in 2019.

“We are absolutely over the moon for him, he is a true champion. We knew from the first time we saw him that he had a real talent and we are just delighted for him,” John Mongan of the Olympic BC told Tribune Sport this week.

“He started boxing with at Furbo Boxing Club with the late John Cahill, Lord rest him, and I remember the first time we saw him, he was in a Boy1 U11 final in the National Arena in Dublin, and we said ‘this fella has something’.
