Talented Burke secures silver medal in 20k walking final

VERONICA Burke of Ballinasloe and District AC won the silver medal in the women’s 20K at the National Race Walking Championships which were held in Raheny in Dublin last weekend.

Burke finished in a time of 1 hour 47 minutes in a race won by West Waterford’s Kate Veale who showed she is very much on the way back to the top, as the former World Youth champion took over five minutes off her personal best time to win in 1.37. Rachel Glennon of Mullingar Harriers was third.

Europeans

Galway City Harriers and Athletics Ireland coach, Matt Lockett, led the Irish U-20 and U-23 men’s teams and the U-20 women’s squad at the European Cross Country championships held on a muddy and demanding course in Tilburg, Holland last weekend.

The U-23 team saw Ryan Forsyth run well, finishing just off a medal with a superb fourth place and the team were sixth overall, while the U-20 men’s squad finished fifth overall with Darragh McElhenny first scorer in 16th. The U-20 women’s team were also placed sixth overall, but only four points off a medal.

NUI Galway athlete, Damien Landers, who runs with Ennis Track, was called into the Irish Senior men’s squad and made a strong debut, coming 78th overall in a world class field.
