Tag Rugby tournament reaches half-way point
Date Published: 25-Jun-2012
The Corinthians Tag Rugby tournament has reached the half-way point in its season, so this week we’ll take a look at the standings in some of the tables.
The Higher Grade consists of six teams, each playing the other twice followed by one round of finals. The Wafflers lead this league having been unbeaten in the first set of round robin games. They clinched the top spot after they edged 22-20 in a thrilling game against Buskers Mangled Badgers.
Beetle Bonnets are a point behind in second place and the Badgers are a further point behind in third. This will be a tightly contested grade, as always.
Division 1 is divided into four groups of four teams leading to knock-out stages in the final weeks of the season. Currently Be a Freud, Fancy a Tag 2, San Quentin Tag and Shave a Bullock top each of the divisions It’s still very tight, though, particularly in the latter two where points difference separate the leaders from Your Auld One and Shave a Bullock respectively.
Division 2 is split into Cup, Bowl, Plate and Spoon competitions with Panthers Exiles, CoCo Nuts, Globo Gym and Bootleggers leading in each one, although the last-mentioned only have a slim points difference over Tag Me Maybe.
The Beginners’ grade is also divided into Cup, Bowl, Plate and Spoon competitions with six teams participating in each section. The Smell of Want, Merit Meteors, Galway Mountain Rescue and Hoof Hearted leading the way respectively.
As reported last week, this Thursday’s matches will be followed by the annual Fancy Dress competition with all proceeds in aid of CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) the charity set up to help reduce the incidence of sudden death in teenagers and young adults.
All teams make a contribution to the charity on the night and compete to win coveted prizes. Lots of preparation has already been done by some teams and the parade will be a fantastic spectacle, as ever.
Even if you’re not involved in tag rugby come along to enjoy the pageantry, have some fun and support a deserving charity. Matches start at 6.40, the fancy dress parade at about 9.30 and entrance is free.
