IT is surprising how such few words can bring such great joy in life. Think ‘Bank Holiday’, ‘heatwave’, ‘free bar’, ‘pay increase’ – simple coupling of words, but match-ups which are guaranteed to bring a smile.
For Galway United fans, the early season results has thrown another couple of words together, words not heard down Terryland way for a long, long time, but words in which the club’s supporters are basking in – ‘league leaders’.
Two wins from their opening two games – their best start to a Premier Division campaign in 24 years – sees Ian Foster’s side sit on top of the pile as they travel east to take on Bray Wanderers
in the Carlisle Grounds this evening (kick-off 7.45pm).
The two sides met six times last season, split evenly between the league and cup competitions, and with United winning four of those encounters, Foster’s side will travel confident of making it three wins on the trot to maintain their lead at the top of the table.
One of United’s best displays last season came in October when Jay O’Shea and Vinny Faherty each grabbed a brace as United tore Bray asunder to run out comfortable 4-0 winners.
In truth, that was a game in which Bray had nothing to play for, while United were scrapping for their Premier Division survival, but the gulf in class was evident all over the pitch, and United will be hoping for a similar display and outcome this evening.
