Galway City Council says swimming restrictions will remain in place at Grattan Beach until further tests are carried out.

It follows consultations with the HSE who say the warnings ‘should not be lifted as a precautionary measure’.

The beach at Salthill has been closed to swimmers since Wednesday after heavy rainfall caused levels of E Coli to breach EU mandatory levels.

The city Council say water samples taken on Wednesday afternoon and yesterday show the levels of the bacteria are now below the mandatory levels.

Assistant director of services for Environment at Galway City Council Francis Mullarkey says the beach remains a non swim area until the water quality is restored.

Further test results are expected tomorrow.
