SWIMMING BAN LIFTED AT GRATTAN BEACH
Date Published: 25-Aug-2012
The swimming ban on Grattan Beach in Salthill has been lifted.(25/08)
Galway City Council took the decision to lift restrictions this lunchtime, after tests showed E. coli levels in the water had dropped ”well below” the EU mandatory permitted values.
The beach had been closed to bathing since Wednesday after tests confirmed high levels of the bacteria, thought to be caused by the recent heavy rainfall.
The outbreak caused concern among local councillors and residents as it struck at the height of the tourist season, and less than a week away from the Iron Man 70.3 competition in Salthill.
The city council has thanked the public for their patience and co-operation over the past few days.
Assistant director of services for Environment Council Francis Mullarkey says testing will continue at Grattan Beach as normal
