SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR LOUGHREA RESIDENT WHO ASSAULTED SOCIAL WELFARE OFFICER
Date Published: 16-Oct-2009
A 32 years old Loughrea resident has been given a five-month suspended sentence for assaulting a social welfare officer.
Simfumeme Yante, 3 Jairdin Drive, Loughrea, pleaded guilty at Galway district court to punching social welfare officer, John Donnellan into the head and face after she arrived at the Social Services office at 25 Newcastle Road, on April 28th.
Hearing evidence of the woman’s personal circumstances, Judge Mary Fahy said she could understand why she might have become agitated but there was no reason for her to assault Mr Donnellan who was there to help her.
Defence solicitor, Olivia Traynor said her client had indeed received help and she was sorry for the assault.
Hearing the accused had no previous convictions, Judge Fahy imposed a five-month prison sentence, which she suspended for twelve months.
