Survey shows Covid-19 has taken its toll on mental health in Galway

A survey carried out among people in Galway found that the mental health of 90% of respondents had been affected by the pandemic.

More than 140 people responded to the online survey which was carried out by Galway West TD Mairéad Farrell.

She said the results came as no surprise, as the World Health Organisation (WHO) had already flagged the effects of the pandemic on mental health, but waiting lists for treatment in Galway have gone from crisis levels to an “emergency”.

“The results have raised issues of concern with 90% of respondents stating that the pandemic has had a negative impact on their mental health, 25% of respondents saying that their mental health appointment had been delayed due to Covid and 88% of people saying that they’ve been feeling down or depressed lately.

“90% of respondents have indicated that their mental health has suffered as a result of the pandemic.

“This sadly comes as no surprise given a WHO report in October 2020 which highlighted that bereavement, isolation, loss of income and fear have triggered mental health conditions in people and exacerbated the mental health of those with existing conditions.

“Pre-pandemic, mental health care waiting lists within the public system were at crisis levels but are now at unprecedented emergency levels. Now more than ever we need to ensure that mental health services are accessible for all those who need them. Nobody should be left behind,” she said.

Deputy Farrell also raised concerns in relation to the increase in those presenting with eating disorders.

“Speaking to people working in mental health across Galway it is clear that there has been a major increase, since the onset of the pandemic, in the number of children and adults presenting with eating disorders.

“The treatment of eating disorders requires very specialised treatment and the Government must ensure that there is sufficient help available for all those who need it. I have written to Minister Mary Butler in relation to these needs in the Galway area.”

The Sinn Féin TD said she will be publishing a report on the survey results and from engagement with mental health professionals and parliamentary questions.
